Honky-tonk singer Stonewall Jackson was born November 6th, 1932, in Tabor City, NC. His strong but emotive tenor caught the attention of Acuff-Rose Music, which led to him to become the first singer passed at Grand Ole Opry without a recording contract. Said contract soon followed with Columbia, and before long he was touring with Ernest Tubb and recording early masterpieces by George Jones such as “Life to Go.” Jackson had dozens of Country Top 40 hits, with tracks like “Waterloo” crossing over near the top of the pop charts. In 1971, he was the first person to record a live album from the Grand Ole Opry. Jackson’s smooth delivery on the jaunty hit “I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water” exemplifies his voice’s enduring appeal. In 2012, Jackson was inducted into the NC Music Hall of Fame (@ncmhof_museum).
