The band Dunums (@dunums_ ) is the brainchild of Durham’s Sijal Nusralla. He described the group’s new record I WASN’T THAT THOUGHT (@sleepycatrec) as orbiting the concept of “love -- its projections and protections, the kind of love I have for myself, the way it is our magnet towards the world we all deserve and don’t have right now.” The record, like all of Dunums' music, is remarkable for the way it connects local events in NC (in this case, the lifeworld of Nusralla’s young daughter) to broader geopolitical concerns. An experimental pop record, fans of bands like Thinking Fellers and Gastr Del Sol will find much to delight in with I WASN’T THAT THOUGHT. It’s a charming listen for all those like their pop spiked with jazz, and well-crafted songs with compositional damage around the edges.
