On February 21, 1933, Eunice Kathlene Waymon, who would go on to become Nina Simone, was born in Tryon, NC. A Civil Rights movement icon and internationally renowned musician, her childhood home in Tryon was declared a National Treasure on June 19, 2018. Among the songs Simone created and produced were "Why (The King of Love is Dead),” and “Young, Gifted and Black,” inspired by the deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and playwright Lorraine Hansberry.
