This Thursday at 9:30 PM on PBS NC’s Shaped by Sound (@mypbsnc) is Black Queer musician and poet Shirlette Ammons (@shirletteammons). Ammons' an organic connector, the sort of artist who serves as a bridge and mediator between disparate genres, personality types, and backgrounds in the Triangle and beyond. They seems to know everyone, but in a down-to-earth way, built from the grassroots up. Ammons' newest record, SPECTACLES, a loose concept album about the commodification of black life, features collaborations with everyone from Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso to theorist Fred Moten. The record is a testament to Ammons' skillful ability to weave together disparate threads of North Carolina music, culture, and community into a stunning tapestry.
