Oxente (pronounced oh-CHEN-she), is a Durham-based community musical group on a mission to Brazilian rhythms through North Carolina. The ensemble plays samba reggae and Afro-Brazilian styles more generally. As this reel details, the syncretic genre of samba reggae took inspiration from the US civil rights struggle, with early performances taking the form of protest against racial inequality. In present day Durham, Oxente unites members of all backgrounds via a shared passion for Brazilian dance and culture.
