Y'all, this weekend has been like tent revival for teachers at the Biscuits and Banjos festival. There are no words that can describe this magic group of Duram Public School teachers, from all cultures and backgrounds, teaching subjects from music to history to ESL. We have listened, learned, laughed, square danced, eaten, loved, and cried our way through these last two days. To say teaching is hard in a post-Covid, technology addicted and polarized world is an understatement. Thank you to the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources's NC Music Office (@comehearnc) for investing in teachers, and thank you to all the folks planning and performing at the Biscuits and Banjos Festival for making teachers feel like the VIPs they truly are. From Shana Tucker (who should be ordained as the Queen of Durham, doing a private workshop for the teachers and making them homemade pound cake and biscuits), to the brilliant Rhiannon Giddens herself for graciously accepting all the teacher selfie requests), this has been a weekend of joy and community that these teacher-folk on the front-lines of Durham needed.
