Born into a musical family and shaped by the old-time sounds of the Round Peak community, Chester McMillian has spent a lifetime playing, teaching, and preserving the region’s rich musical heritage. A close collaborator of the legendary fiddler Tommy Jarrell and founder of the band Backstep, Chester developed a signature guitar strum that’s now part of the Round Peak sound itself. But his greatest legacy might be the one he’s building for the next generation. Through the Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) program, the Round Peak School of Music, and countless acts of generosity, Chester has given his time, talent, and heart to young musicians across Surry County.
